I’ve tested a lot of SEO content tools over the past few years. Most of them promise the same things: better rankings, smarter content briefs, AI writing that sounds human. Most of them deliver a version of that promise, but at very different levels of depth, usability, and actual impact on your workflow.
NeuronWriter and Frase are two tools I kept coming back to, partly because they’re genuinely good, and partly because they’re more different than they first appear. If you’re trying to decide between them, this comparison will save you the weeks I spent figuring it out myself.
What They Are and Who They’re For
NeuronWriter is an NLP-driven content optimisation tool built around one core idea: your content should match what Google’s top-ranking pages actually contain. It analyses competitor content, extracts semantic terms and entities, and tells you exactly what your article needs to include to compete. The writing assistant is a feature on top of that analytical engine, not the other way around.
Frase approaches the problem differently. It starts with research, pulling together top-ranking content, organising it into a brief, and then helping you write against that brief. The AI writing component is more central to Frase’s workflow than NeuronWriter’s, and the research and briefing tools are genuinely excellent.
I’ve used both for content that sits at the intersection of academic writing and SEO, which is exactly what AIStacked.net is built around. My experience may not match yours if you’re running a pure ecommerce site or a news publication, but for content-heavy niche sites, I think this comparison holds up well.
The Research and Briefing Stage
This is where both tools earn their subscription fees, or don’t.
Frase’s research workflow is the best I’ve used at this price point. You enter a target keyword, it pulls the top results, and within seconds you have a structured brief showing what competing pages cover, how long they are, what questions they answer, and what headings they use. The brief is genuinely useful, not just a list of keywords, but a map of the topic landscape.
I wrote about how important this stage is in my Frase review. The short version: if you go into a piece blind, Frase significantly reduces research time and improves the quality of your first draft, because you know what you are dealing with before you write a word.
NeuronWriter does something similar but focuses more on the semantic and entity analysis side. It’s less about “what topics do competitors cover” and more about “what specific terms and concepts does Google associate with this topic.” For sites trying to build topical authority, as I’ve been doing with the academic writing cluster on this site, this is extremely useful. The NLP recommendations tell you not just what to write about but what language to use.
Edge: Frase for overall research workflow. NeuronWriter for semantic depth.
The Writing Experience
I’ll be honest, neither tool produces AI writing that I’d publish without significant editing. That’s not a criticism unique to these two; it applies to most AI content tools. What matters is how much the tool helps you produce better content faster, not whether it can fully replace a human writer.
Frase’s AI writer is integrated directly into the document editor alongside your research. You can ask it to draft sections, expand paragraphs, or write to a specific heading, with your brief and competitor data visible in the same interface. This side-by-side workflow is genuinely well designed.
NeuronWriter’s AI writer is competent but feels like a secondary feature. The real value is the content score, a real-time metric that shows how well your current draft uses the recommended semantic terms. Watching that score improve as you write is oddly motivating. It keeps you focused on what actually matters for ranking.
As I noted in my NeuronWriter review, the content scoring is where NeuronWriter genuinely differentiates itself. Frase has a similar feature but it’s less granular and less central to the workflow.
Edge: Frase for writing workflow. NeuronWriter for content scoring and optimisation.
SEO Depth and Content Strategy
If your primary goal is ranking content, and let’s be honest, for most affiliate sites it is, NeuronWriter has the edge. Its SERP analysis goes deeper than Frase’s, the entity recommendations are more precise, and the content score is a more reliable guide to whether your article is likely to compete.
I’ve been using NeuronWriter’s recommendations alongside Frase’s briefs in a combined workflow, Frase for the initial research and structure, NeuronWriter for the optimisation pass before publishing. It is an extra step but the results have been worth it.
If you’re building topical authority in a focused niche, as I’ve argued in my Architects Guide to Topical Authority, having the semantic layer that NeuronWriter provides is a meaningful advantage over writing purely from intuition.
Edge: NeuronWriter for SEO depth.
Pricing
Frase starts at around $15/month for the basic plan, which gives you access to the research and brief tools with limited AI writing credits. The Pro plan at $45/month unlocks unlimited AI writing and the full feature set.
NeuronWriter’s pricing is credit-based, starting at around $19/month. The credit system can feel restrictive if you’re producing high volumes of content, but for a focused niche site publishing a few pieces per week it’s more than adequate.
Both tools offer free trials worth taking seriously before committing. My advice is to run the same keyword through both tools during the trial and compare the briefs and recommendations side by side. The difference in how they present information will tell you quickly which workflow suits you.
Edge: Frase on entry-level pricing. NeuronWriter better value at mid-tier for focused niche sites.
The Verdict
| Feature | NeuronWriter | Frase |
|---|---|---|
| Research and briefing | ✅ Strong | ✅ Excellent |
| AI writing | ⚠️ Secondary feature | ✅ Well integrated |
| Content scoring | ✅ Best in class | ⚠️ Less granular |
| SEO depth | ✅ Superior | ⚠️ Solid but shallower |
| Pricing | ⚠️ Credit-based | ✅ Straightforward |
| Workflow integration | ⚠️ More steps | ✅ Seamless |
Choose NeuronWriter if you’re serious about semantic SEO and want the most precise content optimisation available at this price point. It’s the better tool if ranking is your primary goal and you’re willing to invest time in the optimisation workflow.
Choose Frase if you want a faster, more integrated research-to-writing workflow and the AI writing assistant matters as much as the SEO analysis. It’s the better tool for teams or for anyone who values speed and simplicity.
My own preference, and the combination I would recommend for any serious content site, is using both. Frase for the research phase, NeuronWriter for the optimisation pass. They complement each other better than they compete with each other.
